2:00 Development of CEN standards for the rail industry. - Bill Mortel, Trelleborg Their purpose, impact on National standards, and legal implications.

2:30 BS 903 - a standard for rubber testing - Peter Lewis, BSI TechnicalCommittee BS 903, first published in 1940, is among the best known standards for rubber and its series of tests are widely used in material and product specifications. Recent developments within BSI and ISO/TC45 are considered with particular reference to engineering properties and rubber durability. Examples are testing to assist the use of FEA, selective data presentation and the estimation of life time from accelerated tests. Problems remaining include the continuing absence of a reliable test for abrasion resistance, the general need for improved test precision and, not least, the disappointing involvement of manufacturing industry in the standardization process.

3:00 Deriving Benefits from Standardization - Brigitte Faubert, BSI The National Standardization Strategic Framework (NSSF) was launched in 2003 to raise awareness of the broader benefits of standardization to business, government and society. The presentation will give a brief progress report of what has been achieved so far and future plans.

These talks are to be followed by a Group Discussion and tea at 4pm.
